Migration in progress

For some reason, the importer doesn’t like posts made in 2007, no idea why, so the most recent entry is from 2006.  Also, it didn’t transfer my tags in, which was slightly more annoying.  Ah well.

Never tell me the odds

William Hill has a set of odds for entertainment related stuff for next year. Some of them are suitably daft. This link may work (if not go to their homepage, on the left click specials/tv then entertainment) (via-sort of):

Lord Voldermort Revealed To Be The Killer Of Harry Potter : 5/1
Prince William To Have A State Wedding : 6/1
Beatles To Have A No. 1 Single : 10/1
Dumbledore To Be Brought Back To Life In Final Harry Potter Book : 10/1
Harry Potter - Ron & Hermoine To Marry : 10/1
Daniel Craig To Win Best Actor Oscar : 25/1
Lembit Opik And Cheeky Girls To Have A Number 1 : 66/1
Proof That The 1969 Lunar Landings Never Happened : 250/1
Queen To Abdicate : 10/1

Note that on the full list, the Queen to abdicate thing is at the bottom, way after the Loch Ness monster and Kate Moss silliness, but has significantly shorter odds. Also note that Harry Potter gets as many entries as Posh and Becks.

Can one of the Harry Potter experts out there confirm: I thought the whole point of the ghosts thing is that death is just another state of being? Ergo he’s not going to come back to life, but is going to be a character in the book? Bet someone’ll be conned into putting money down anyway, and then whinge about their own stupidity afterwards…

Also? The Sun says Tennant to leave Dr Who. The BBC denies it. Given Tennant is the biggest fanboy ever, I’ll go with the Beeb version for now (via). Right, 2am. Time to go to bed. I have Torchwood DVDs to (re)watch.

Those resolution thingies…

I don’t, normally, do them. Although some of these are not bad:

10> Yoda: I will stop talking like a backwater rube and speak using normal grammar like every one else. My resolution this is. Damn!

But, y’know, maybe new year, new start, new town; some resolutions? Well, maybe some vague plans. OK.

  1. If it’s a day that I’m not being paid to be anywhere, I’ll try to at least get out of bed before noon. NB, climbing back into bed and deciding to read a good book or watch a DVD is perfectly acceptable, as long as I’ve got up at least once. I failed to do this yesterday and today. Ah well, it’s not January yet.
  2. As I’m moving to a town where there are things to do in the evenings, cultural activities of note and a variety of different clubs and bars, I’ll try to actually make use of them, sometimes. Maybe. In Torquay, I’ve an excuse for not getting out more, but in London?
  3. I’ll stop reduce the amount of time I spend taking the piss out of . NB; these are aspirations, not promises
  4. I’ll try to remember to put the newspapers for recycling before they’re 6 months old. Keeping huge piles of them doesn’t have a point at all now they’re all archived online, and I never actually went back to refer to them anyway
  5. Drink more. SRSLY, I barely drink at all, which is daft. I include within this finding more things I like to drink than whiskey and cider.
  6. Stop trying to make long pointless lists you know no one is reading. Ah, ok then…

It’s, officially, the last day of the year 2006. Not figured out yet where I’ll be in 23 hours time, at least two options appeal, Hub where and others are DJing, or THTXB, where many other friends will be. We’ll see.

All this assumes, of course, that I get out of bed at all. I might, possibly, write a review of the Torchwood DVD extras, if I can be bothered; anyone specifically want me to? Lack of a response does not mean I won’t, but getting one means I might actually make some effort…

Is everyone on LJ?

Hmm…

Remember when I wrote this about my admissions tutor at University, Bill Tupman?

[1] Bill was the admissions tutor that let me into the course at Exeter. He was also the regular who propped up the bar in the Jolly Porter when I lived there, and a top bloke: great company and always worth a chat in the evenings. It was his course, with the ‘assessed website’ element that got me to learn the basics of coding and prompted me to register my first domain name. It was also, of course, his module that I failed to complete, leading me to get the BA without the (hons). Figures, doesn’t it?

Well, um, Bill Tupman = , and has just made a few comments on that post.

It seems that no matter how much I dislike elements of LJ (and I am definitely decamping to Wordpress in the New Year for most of my stuff), there are other elements that have definite appeal…

(Also? The Fx2.0 spellchecker tells me I’ve been spelling definately wrong for years. Ah well…)

Bah, Humbug!

Well, I’m back online properly, and a quick glance at friends page and feeds. A lot to catch up on. If I’ve missed anything of personal import let me know as I’ll be scanning not reading for the most part.

Spent most of the week either at my parents, Rob’s or in bed with a book or a DVD. Didn’t buy any electric cards last weekend, so couldn’t use much that required power until Anne upstairs came back, me silly fule. Got some book tokens from my sister (she’s learning), some Dr Who DVDs from my parents, and chocolate plus some cash from both grandmothers. Went and bought myself Dr Who series II and Torchwood Pt I boxing day, natch. Also bought myself the paperback, which I’m halfway through, rather good so far. ’s second novel is, I think, better than his first, and definitely the sort of SF I want to be reading, made me think and entertained. This is good.

Torchwood? Will do a proper review style thing when I’m caught up, but initial reaction? OMG yes. More please. Flawed, at times the plotting is daft, and a bit too twee in a few ways, but overall impressive, and better than 90% of other stuff out there. Also, Gwen has a rather nice arse, shame they took her out of the uniform. And Tosh is cute as well. Sorry, I’ll, um, go back to reading my feeds and friends list…

Tribute by cartoons

So very cool. mr_esty: R.I.P. Joe Barbera:

Joe Barbera died yesterday, at age 95. In his honor; I propose that everyone who reads this draws a Hanna-Barbera character. You can post your drawings here in the comments section, if you like.

My dial up dumped out on my twice with that page, but it was worth it…

So, what was that about a Christian country?

So, I should celebrate Christmas because it’s a Christian festival (wrong) and because Britain is a Christian country? ORLY?

Britain’s generally tolerant attitude to religion is underlined by the small proportion who say the country is best described as a Christian one. Only 17% think this. The clear majority, 62%, agree Britain is better described as “a religious country of many faiths”.

In fact, following on from earlier discussion, it would appear that I’m in the clear majority:

Most people have no personal faith, the poll shows, with only 33% of those questioned describing themselves as “a religious person”. A clear majority, 63%, say that they are not religious - including more than half of those who describe themselves as Christian.

Regarding those who describe themselves as “Christian” but don’t believe? Charlie puts it best:

this is more of an ethnic or cultural definition than a spiritual one

So, it’s December 23rd, I’m up and about, had a shower and a bit to eat. I’m off to celebrate the True Meaning of Christmas. Shopping. With my family.

So, from the bottom of my heart, this little atheist would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a very genuine Merry Christmas, because the whole thing has nothing to do with that little kid who might have been born about 2000 years ago, during lambing season, at the time of a census. Both of which took place in March.

Thorntons, Barrow and blogging

Or, what not to do with your online blog. Enraged locals drive blogger from Barrow-in-Furness | The Register:

Steve Beall, 20, had been relocated from Whitley Bay by choc outfit Thorntons to run a new “Cafe Thorntons” in the sun-kissed Cumbrian paradise. The firm put him up in a local Travelodge, but he evidently wasn’t impressed with his new home. Under the name “Stevo”, Beall wrote: “Well then what is there to say about Barrow in Furness apart from its a s***-hole!! “How the hell people live there I’ll never no [sic]”

Silly damn fool. If you’re going to write about work online, then either completely anonymise it (cf NHS Blog Doc, Bystander, etc) or be very very careful about what you say and how you say it.

Or, alternately, use those privacy functions that even MySpace allows (and LJ does so much better) and make sure it’s not publicly available. And next time it’s my last day and my boss says I can go home when I’ve done clearing the desk, I’ll make sure to set the file transfer of the zip of all my personal stuff up a little earlier… Filezilla is about 42% into a 120Mb upload. Which given we’re on ADSL is taking it’s time even though I’m the only one here except the Deputy MD…

Still, found some fun old files from years back, including the CV I used to apply for the job.

Web pages that really suck

I’ve mentioned Vincent Flanders’ a few times before, but todays is particularly apposite given recent news and interest, plus more than a few of you reading this. Web Pages That Suck — Examples of Bad Web Design:

As far as MMN goes, you’re looking at a very expensive cut of meat — she’s got the money for the best Mystery Meat money can buy. She should have an obvious link to a site that would answer your questions because there are lots of folks like you who want just the facts.

The site in question? J. K. Rowling.

Because, as sites go, playing hangman to find out the answer to a news announcement? That’s just crazy talk.

Meh, last day at work, last few hours in the office, I’m still trying to clear and sort my desk, it’s more than a little weird…
