Revenge of the Sith is one of the worst movies I’ve seen recently. It’s Battlefield Earth bad.

Well, that sort of put me off bothering completely, I still haven’t watched Clowns, so unless someone I trust strongly recommends Ep III to me I’ll likely not bother.
Anyone seen it that thinks I ought to go see?

Well, combining the insomnia, the “burglary” and the apathy has meant I’ve acheived nothing this weekend except “rest”. Not even tidied up, which had been the main plan for today. Ah well.
Did, however, watch the DVDs which arrived Friday morning. Doctor Who disc one is excellent, glad I ordered it, and I can see why people are talking about how great it is, I’ve even begun to like Billie/Rose. Also, the DVD is itself well put together.
Angel series 5? Good, as expected, amusing, well produced, mostly funny; I especially like the episode where Spike and Angel go to Rome, no idea who “The Immortal” is but, well, funny.
However, what is it with crappy DVD manufacturers that have over the top interactive menues and annoyingly long intros? I had the same issue with Dark Angel as well. Doctor Who, I can just put in the disk and press play. This is good. Angel insists that I wait for a copyright warning to finish on every DVD (I bought it, I paid for it, and I don’t copy stuff, stop telling me what I already agree with FFS), but also insists I both select each episode and then confirm I want to watch it and not a ’special feature’.
Given how crappy my TV resolution is, negotiating menues I can’t read clearly is tricky. I want to just hit play, the way I can with B5, Crusade, and, IIRC, Firefly. But with Angel I have to go through 2 separate menues and watch a crappy intro between each one.
Stupid. Ah well; back to work tomorrow, not that I’ll sleep tonight. I suspect more re-watching is coming on.

See, I was almost feeling sleepy at about 3.20am. Then I heard a weird noise coming from outside, so I climb onto the bed, open the window, and peek out.
There’s a bloke trying to break into the laundry shed. Now, I never use it; I prefer a launderette or go to my sisters or parents, but we’ve had people break in tere to sleep and steel bits of the machines before, so I shout at him to get lost.
Turns out it’s the new bloke from downstairs; he’s only lived there 2 months, never met him. Except, WTF was he doing trying to break in? Claimed he’d been at work since 7am, had to be back again at 7am, and needed the clothes he’d left in there this morning.
This is an excuse for him to break the lock why, exactly? I asked him this, he responded by asking if I was one of the ‘people’ that kept him awake with music last night. How this was related to his braking and entering I don’t know, (it wasn’t me, natch, but, well, not relevent). Seemed to think that because he needed the clothes, breaking the locks was perfectly ok. Told him to piss off and sort it out in the morning.
Sp, here I am. 4.40am, no sign of sleep, birdsong outside. Supposed to be meeting an agent and our asian rep tomorrow, help Jules give them a tour of the bay, but it’s optional. To make it, I now need to not sleep, in which case I’ll be cranky. Bugger, need to get into marketing if I want to stay in the industry, but my fuckwit neighbour has messed it up again. Gah!
Insomnia sucks, especially if you have a 9-5 job. It was bearable when I was studying, but now it’s killing me.

If she hadn’t asked a question about where to buy a DVD, I’d never have gone to the site. Oops…

, I nearly bought some B5 DVDs, but as you’re working your way through the set, I figured we ought to start trying to swap stuff. Any Devon people interested in setting up some sort of DVD lending thing? I only got the player a few months ago. Ah well, is spending your money on sci-fi tv series more or less geeky than spending it on CCGs? I kick one addiction and go straight into another. Still haven’t bought the flight tickets for Bologna next weekend either.
In other news, um, not much. I’m getting fed up repeating my availabilty to various GW types; “I can do evenings and weekends, I’d rather not work Sunday, I’d prefer it if you gave the hours to people who need the money, I’m always available in an emergency”. How hard is that for a manager to understand? I felt a little sorry for the Plymouth manager while we were talking though, he’s obviously a careerist, and I didn’t have the heart to burst his bubble; “I work here when needed, because it’s fun and a break fromt he office. I don’t want a career with the company, I helped train both of your current bosses when they started with the company, and I earn more than you do, I don’t need the money.” I don’t think he’d have liked that. Was supposed to work tonight, but I was asked to switch to Thursday instead.
Suits me, meant I could listen to the new Guide episode at first broadcast. Went to Jason’s Sunday, played Pirates of the Spanish Main; great game, we’ve, um, bought a few boats for it; recommend it to anyone who likes the idea of miniature games but, like me, can’t be arsed by all the painting bollocks, it’s better than the other games they’ve done because the models actually look reasonably good when put together. That and the Captain Jack Sparrow impressions you can do…
Well, back to catching up with webcomics; to those annoyed by the star wars link in my last post? You didn’t have to click it, and, well, I just needed to share the pain. Still haven’t completely ruled out London this weekend coming; Mike, if I do come up, I’ll find a cheap hotel in town, but likely park near you. Unlikely to happen, but, well, I could do with a break and is going; bit daft to meet up with a friend who lives in Devon by going to London really…

You’ve supported Lucas on every level. You’ve fervently thrown your
money and love at him. Therefore, I’d like to say one thing: This is your fucking fault.
How scary is that?

My insomnia kicked in last night, work is beginning to get stressful; I know that, no matter what happens and how well I do, everyone will blame me for any and all problems this summer; my job inevitably has problems, it’s the nature of the business. The trick is to reduce te number, and deal with those that happen well.
Regardless, people will still think I’m crap even if I do better than anyone else could possibly do (which, not wanting to sound too arrogant, is likely). Ah well.
Zoe my exceptionally capabla deputy is moving house this week, Julie, the new assistant, is settling in well, so things should be ok. Still scared shitless though, as usual. Doesn’t help that the new MD and Dep MD/ops (my direct boss) are both new, so have nothing to compare it to.
Anyway, more interesting meme than normal, from .
1.. The resignation of Margaret Thatcher (22nd November 1990)
Watching the news at home, I was still at school, I can remember the live broadcast still, fun fun (with a little cheer)
2. The start of the first Gulf War (16th January 1991)
In my room at my parents, I think I was watching TV while painting warhammer stuff, I know I had paints out doing something.
3. The release of British hostage John McCarthy (8th August 1991)
On holiday somewhere; I had a string of August holidays where something happened, the previous year Saddam ivaded Kuwait.
4. Tony Blair becoming Prime Minister (1st May 1997)
Living and working in Salisbury (don’t, just don’t), and yes, I was up for Portillo.
5. The Death of Princess Diana (30th August 1997)
I heard about it on the way to paintballing in Exeter, didn’t believe Grasshopper until lunchtime when we heard it confirmed on the radio. More memorable is the attempt to drive to work the next day, everything was shut, including the 24 hour petrol stations. Moral blackmailing by the tabloid press; none of my then colleagues were interested in watching the damn funeral. Then, gaming geeks, perhaps to be expected.
6. The Al Qaeda attacks on the USA (11th September 2001)
Finishing off my summer job in the office for the year, I ended up spending the afternoon communicating with agents that had clients staying in our Florida school (which was lucky to not go bust because of the problems)
7. The death of the Queen Mother (30th March 2002)
No idea, let’s face it, it wasn’t unexpected; it’s the surprising events you remember.
8. The “end” of the second Gulf War and the demolition of Saddam Hussein’s statue (10th April 2003)
No idea.
9. The capture of Saddam Hussein (13th December 2003)
In California eating breakfast at a Denny’s, Vince told me, so I went and bought a copy of USA today from a vending machine; we were attending the first GenCon SoCal.
10. The Tsunami (26th December 2004)
I was on the net, a link to a news story was put up on the Temple, a site I used to moderate.

Well, I slept in today as well, to be expected really considering yesterday, but, well, I finally left the flat again at 4pm, went to buy the papers. For the first time in a long time I bought more than just my usual Independent. To be precise, I bought the Times, Guardian, FT and Torygraph as well. Skimmed them all so far (been reading weblogs all day, I really like The Snow in Summer and Europhobia), and The Times wins ‘best map’ award at first glance.
I finally dragged myself offline and into the shower after 9pm, and I still haven’t eaten a proper meal. Guess Bunkering is out really. Probably a bit silly; 5 days in a row off work by my choice and virtually nil human contact. Then again, I’m not a social animal really, so it’s been nice to have a break.
Finally also bought the new NiN album, at first listen, OK, better review if I can be arsed; I really need to get my car stereo plugged back in. Also bought the B5 Crusade series DVDs (, I’m now unlikely to be back in London until June, I can either post your DVDs or give them to so he can return them when he next travels? Let me know).
The bags were a bit heavy when I walked up to GW to see the guys, so before elaving I went through them and took out the crap I’m not interested in. Telegraph won ‘most pointless bits I didn’t want’ award, 6 separate supplements, OTOH, Independent only had one, the rest is now absorbed into the main paper. Why have weekend papers got so bloated? I want a newspaper, not lifestyle supplements, travel guidance, money advice, etc. Why one of them (preferably the Indy) doesn’t just do a ’standard’ paper at the normal weekday price is beyond me, maybe I should suggest it to them. So, load lightened, and a decent chat to Anthony and Alan (be warned Exeter GW types, he’s on his way up there for 2 months soon; I’ve let him know how to deal with you).
Got back, read lots of weblogs, and generally kept thinking about the results. Overall, reasonably happy; of the three main parties, we came out best I think, but nowhere near what I was hoping for. Snow in Summer said it best; “Sinn Fein and DUP win, everyone else loses”. So true. The NI results are scary; peace process under current plans shows little liklihood of getting back on track, hope it doesn’t go back again.
Well, Reith lectures are on, been a great series as ever. More reading of papers planned now for the evening; off to GameSoc tomorrow, to play and at 40K. First time I’ve been invloved in a game with either of them, so about time. Should be fun; the worst that can happen is we spend the afternoon arguing over rules…
There’s also an x-net social at the Impy tomorrow evening, if the game finishes, I might go along. Might.

Bugger, forgot to change the ‘posti to’ bit, so this ended up in my journal as well (briefly); a bit on Electoral Reform, the spurious “no-platform” ideal and why last night is a good reason to change is written up here in .

Veritarse lost his deposit, and is refusing to speak to the BBC reporter, she’s not very complementary about him on Radio 4.
And Sarah Teather stays in Brent East. Very very cool.
