Livejournallers are “dysfunctional geeks and gun nuts”

A comment on this Samizdata.net post amused:

I just finished a meeting with a company regarding the filiming of a TV advert for their web-based job search company. It was suggested that they explore the possibility of using a weblog to expand their web reach, against which the in-house webdesigner launched a somewhat excessive tirade along the lines of. “nobody except dysfunctional geeks and pro-Bush gun nuts reads those sort of things” and then asked how many of us actually had a blog.

Everyone (about 9 of us) except him raised a hand …

Quick handcount now puts me on 5 (sort of) with a lot more on the way very soon, most to be collaborative.

Met with my MP Wednesday. He’s thinking of setting one up, can I help? Hmm…

Mat thinks back to his ‘plan for the year’. Yup, as I was going to work on you to start one, helping you do so before I’ve even started the effort seems like a good plan…

Exeter Wargames show tomorrow (well, today), will be selling some old gaming stuff on the bring and buy; had no idea Minas Tirith was worth that much, probably eBay that one if no one picks it up. No plans afternoon/early evening yet, going to a party later evening.

Can someone explain this to me?

I know there are some physicists and other science types hanging around, this looks very cool, but it’s way beyond my normal abilities to get the basics of science.
Quantum computer solves problem, without running

“In a sense, it is the possibility that the algorithm could run which prevents the algorithm from running,” Kwiat said. “That is at the heart of quantum interrogation schemes, and to my mind, quantum mechanics doesn’t get any more mysterious than this.”

Oh yeah; the performancing plug in for Firefox is great, as is the Livejournal Hook extension; both are on addons.mozilla.org

Got back from Rob’s; the Soviet forces failed to make a breakthrough against the Wehrmacht, I blame the overall commander, who, um, forgot that he could command people.

Blitzkrieg Commander, top game, unless your heavy mortar company decides to withdraw…

OMFG- what have I let myself in for?

OK, last Tuesday, I was tired, decided to take an early night. Unusually, I took a shower (I’m a morning shower person, usually, although I shouldn’t be, they help me sleep). Y’know how it is in the shower when sometimes you get a ‘moment of clarity’ and everything comes together? I had one of those. I could see the ‘perfect blog post’ in my head. It was the right time, the right reason and the news of the week wasn’t cheering me up. I came out of the shower, turned the PC on, and typed the whole thing up, wrapped only in a towel. It, um, captured the mood.

When we started counting numbers for the site, 100+ was a bloody good day. Then we got a bit more established, 150 was good, 100 was avarage. Recently, 150 became avarage. Until last Wednesday…
Look at that spike. It’s stayed up there, today, we’ve got even more before the normal busy time even starts. I got used to linking every so often. had done so as an aside. This weekend, I’ve been their link of the day. Today, we’re top link on . That’s a whole lotta readers; including more than a few MPs.

What have I let myself in for? I appear to be in the centre of a blogswarm and the beginnings of two new political movements, one of which should have long-term legs. It’s just l’il ol’ me, I was just writing up an idea I had while dripping wet and naked.

Um, ? We’ve got everyone’s attention; my MP has emailed asking me to help him on his website and offered research and info assistance. Um; I have no idea what to do next, apart from go with the flow.

Anyway, I have a post to make, momentum to maintain, and a game to go to. Holy…

Dentists, day off, whiskey…

Went to the Dentists today. For those that don’t know me that well, that’s a pretty momentous event; Iwrote teh full version as to why up here on ; as is usual for a post on the kitchen, swearing and insults are de rigeuer. Short version, haven’t seen a dentist properly in five years, last time I had any treatment, the butcher messed it up, I had a very painful extraction and it scared me off.

My parents signed up with a new NHS dentist, and signed me up at the same time. So, I went. And am still alive. Not sure I can afford to pay for the 7 fillings I need, but at least I know I need them. Actually, on the money front, if any Amazon buyers feel helpful, can you go there via a link from the blog when you plan to buy stuff? Could do with the cash. Cost you nowt but a few more clicks, and we get 10%. Yay!

On the way home, it was raining, so my plan of a wonder down the seafront with the camera turned into a walk back to the flat. Went into the local store, and couldn’t resist the temptation to buy a bottle of whiskey. Small one mind, not getting carried away. So, I’ve had a nice relaxing day off recovering from the dentists and slowly getting happy drinking whiskey.

Today has also been the second busiest on the blog ever; Wednesday was the third. The busiest was when someone linked to the stupid blonde joke via a Libertines forum (yes, I felt dirty). Finally made the breakthrough, might even actually get somewhere with the Liberty Central project.

G’Kar is dead, they’re remaking Monkey

Andreas Katsulas died on Monday. Having recently watched the first four seasons again (thanks to DVD loans from and ), this depresses me, he truly made that series, and was obviously a damn fine actor. I think I shall watch an episode again tonight before sleeping, in his honour.

Also, and this scares me, they’re remaking Monkey. This seems, wrong, to me. Monkey is Monkey, next up they’ll be doing an English language version, or getting the dubbing to actually make sense.

Ah well. Both stories on Murky, really must see if it’s syndicated already, impressive reach that site.

Oh yeah, I don’t think I mentioned it here. Shiny Thing. When I was talking about StoryCode a few weeks back, it was because I was alpha testing BlogCode, which is very cool. Especially as it no longer thinks my best match is Harry’s Place.

OK, when I put the last post up, I thinkt he very last person I expected to be keen to join was the distinctly non-geeky . And then I remembered her status as the uber grammar nazi and it all made sense. So, a game of Grammar Fascist

Critical Miss: Grammar Fascist

has the new issue of Critical Miss finally done.

As a former fairly active forum mod in a number of places, I especially like Grammar Fascist. I so want to play it sometime. Any volunteers/nominated forums? Preferably one where I’m not well known/loathed/missed, etc.
