- on web standards and LJ accessibility. Very, very cool article, well researched and some good points. I (mostly) agree with her, I’ve made a few quibbles in the comments. If’n you don’t know, she’s the winner of that Style Contest thing 6A ran, and deservedly so, even if she did choose a bloody awful font; layout/change style: pick style contest: the late show, that’s her. Nice, innit? Go read the article, put some time aside, it’s just worth it.
- with some absolutely awesome pics of forced perspective room decorations. Really well done, very freaky.
- asks:
Why is it that the first character most girls make … is a Night Elf Hunter?
and it’s a good question. There are, of course, two reasons I don’t play Warcrack
- I’m on a dial up connection
- If I start, I’ll never stop
but I do love the background, suitable daft high fantasy…
- Also? is a sneaky cheatin’ b’stard. Most of us knew that, but look at that list. No wonder he got to level 8 before me…
G’night all…

I just got beaten in a fight because I haven’t got enough ‘children’, so go sign up so I can win some more. He’s got it on his own domain now, maybe the server can handle it this time…

Well, I was inspired by ’s link earlier to the new L5R promo Khan’s Defiance (worth a look even if you’re not an L5R fan, some damn fine art in that animation. Some crappy stuff as well, but, y’know Todd’s in charge now, we can’t expect beet level quality…
Anyway, went back to my old links page and dug out some art to possibly make some icons with. I’ve done Yudoka already, natch, but I’ve used him before, so I’m thinking of Paneki or similar. Anyway, Mark Evans has redesigned his site since last I was there. My old link was to /index.html. Have a look at what it comes up with now:
File not found
Innit cute?
Look, it’s the internet. As far as I can tell, the internet now exists mostly so that people can post pictures of cats. I don’t own a cat. So I’m using someone else’s picture. OK with you?

I finally succumbed (Library Thing profile), and signed up yesterday, and have been cataloguing for a bit. I sort of gave up tagging after the first book, but it’s rather cool. I found on there by the simple tactic of “people who own similar books”, and by similar method I think is BoPeep, yes?
You’re allowed 200 books on a free account, and I’m at over 150 already, and I’m nowhere near finished with the books I actually like/use. I like the recommendations features, there’s a pile of books on that list I’ve been meaning to get for ages anyway. And the Unsuggester can be fun as well; type in your favourite book, see what book you’re least likely to like/own. Except, from the sidebar, I’m actually quite likely to get Kissinger’s book, and Thud! remains a favourite from the year.
Question for those using it? Any easy way to select a different edition of the same book? For some reason it keeps giving me French or German prints (and, in one case, Serbian), and while I’ve no real objection to appearing my of a linguist than I am, it is a little daft, and I can’t figure out an easy way. Also, apart from Groups, is there a ‘networking’ aspect I’m missing? Regardless, a cool site.
? Be warned. It could eat away lots of free time.

Look, I know you’ve had a quiet week for the most part, but I think it’s time to explain a few home truths.
- I do not have a PayPal account
- I do not have an eBay account
- I have no real interest in OEM software
- I have never bought a ticket in the Netherlands lottery
- If I want to look at porn, I will go and look at porn you don’t need to mail me with links to your crappy redirect sites
- What is Cialis anyway. And, for that matter, can you please learn to spell Viagra?
- Those 419 advance fee fraud things you keep sending me? Only work on people with money in their bank account, I don’t
- I have a decent spam filter anyway…
That last is the clincher here, right?
Spam still exists because people are stupid enough to click on the links and buy the product a very small number of times. There’s normally a post on, for example, every week from someone asking if the email they’ve received from PayPal is genuine. Yet, for the most part, the only real problem spam causes me is checking my spam folder for false positives every so often and then emptying it. I last did it Wednesday evening. Last night, it had about 200 messages in it. Today? 647. Ouch.
But, the good bit? Of those 400+ new spams since midnight last night? Not a single one got into my inbox. Not a single false positive either. Rarely get anything in my work inbox either, but the false positives there can be a bit annoying at times, but at least the whitelist works. Now, ok, not everyone has effective spam filtering, and sometimes those that do don’t a) realise it’s there or b) check it for false positives properly, which can mean genuine legitimate email can get lost. But for the most part, the era of annoying spam is ending. It’s just a part of life that we deal with.
For those either using, or thinking of using, a Wordpress.org install, then Bad Behaviour is a definite must. 2369 in the last 7 days. Akismet hasn’t had to do anything more after that.
So, dear friends. If you would be so kind as to target your advertising bollocks more effectively, and stop sending me stuff that’s completely irrelevent, I would very much appreciate it. I’m already signed up for a few sites created by former colleagues of yours that exist specifically to spam me stuff, you could learn from them and realise the game is up? Thanks chaps, much appreciated.

I feel like someone in a Douglas Adams book. This morning, on the way to work, nice clear day, roads a little damp, beautiful rainbow over the park as I entered Paignton. I find a parking space near the office, get out of the car. It starts to drizzle a little. No problem, y’see, I like the rain…
Then it starts raining properly as I turn the corner into St Micheals Road. Then, as I turn into Conway Road, it starts raining hard. Bugger says me, getting damp now. Then, as I walk into our nice new pedestrian entrance with the long walk across the lawn? It starts hailing. I enter reception dripping wet and looking a complete mess, with lots of people there watching me, the bastards. I dry myself off, get to the desk, log into the computer, look out the window. Sunshine, the rain (and hail) has stopped.
Lunch today? I walk to my normal cafe, it’s fine. When I finish and start walking back? Guess what? It starts to get worse and worse the closer I get to the office. As soon as I’m at my desk, it stops again. When I say I like the rain? Light rains yes, downpours when I’m just about to get to the office? Not good.
Anyway. Dr Who. Because they’ve lost so many of the old episodes as they didn’t realise they’d be worth something and burnt the tapes, for some of the classic stories they’re remaking them as animations. Yay! has made some great icons and also done a fair few screencaps. Does that look cool or what? Will have to add to my wishlist when I get home…

Busy at work, catching up after the week off, still not up to speed with friends page, etc. In the meantime, Tim Worstall:
Despite that I’ll go out on a limb here and state that in my opinion Nikkogen is a scam. A fraud. Don’t get involved with it, don’t try to work for them, don’t try to sign a marketing agreement and most certainly don’t try to provide them with any services or investment capita … Anyone who would like to spread this information by linking to this post with the anchor text ‘Nikkogen’ would be most welcome.
So, here we go, Nikkogen. The moral of this story?
Don’t spam my blog comments Sonny
We don’t like spammers we don’t. So, I’ll add it to my links list later, but if’n people would like to do the usual? The last one is still effective…

Via , unfortunately they’ve done something weird to the output code, so hacked it something chronic to get the red lines back in. Anyway, back in, exhausted, crashing now. Need to take train home tomorrow, will do a proper update then.
