The Xmas Factor: best seasonal song ever?

Ye gods, what a silly publicity stunt for a radio show, running a silly online poll in a cheap rip off of some TV show I’ve not watched. Still, what do we expect from Capital Gold:

The day’s match is launched during the Capital Gold Breakfast Shows. You then have 24 hours in which to vote for your favourite song out of the day’s choices.

The daily champs will move into the next round until we have the 2006 Xmas Factor Champion. The winner will be announced on Friday December 22.

Thing is? The finalists are some Queen song[1] and Fairy Tale of New York. Given yesterdays discussion, the results should be conclusive, but it appears that there are some fans of that godawful Queen song. As I look, it’s exactly 50/50. So go make a choice. No pressure of course. Vote.

[1]Queen may have once been Mat’s favourite band ever. He currently denies this having discovered a sense of musical taste. However, there are still a number of songs by them that rate as all-time greats, even if they are cheesy pomp rock. The song competing against FONY isn’t one of those greats.

[2] Oh yeah, aside. I mentioned I’m using Deepest Sender to make Braindumps for memes and links I want to write about later, yes? Well, um, I currently have 12 posts in the line up. I’m assuming you don’t want them all at once?

  4. I’m not wondering if the Queen fans are deleting their cookies and reposting.

  5. It, um, might have crosssed my mind to do an f-locked “how to” on that, but I decided against it.

I’m thinking it more to do with people having no taste.

  6. Well, I’ve found out that they aren’t doing it by deleting all capitol gold cookies nor the one labelled favourite artistes.

  7. She is in fact someone I’ve come close to adding a few times, far too much a crossover of interests, but have never really got around to doing.

Mebbe later. Need more people to linkwhore the poll methinks.

  8. Ah, in that case it’s IP based. So I could keep voting by simply going on and offline, but most broadband users can’t.

Hmm, wonder how many total votes there are? Alternately, just need to get more people to go vote. *ponders9

  13. Well, you should. She’s great. I sent her a Christmas present.

  14. I’d try but I’m worried about the general quality of the audience, I suspect they may vote the wrong way :-(

    Comment by matgb | December 21, 2006

  15. Mmmm. Well I have pointed out that it is clearly a feminist issue that FTofNY *isn’t* winning.

    Comment by juggzy | December 21, 2006

  16. IP based it is. Have tried the above methods in order to induce a Norn Iron-style voting scenario :) Feminist issue or not, it appears the “silent majority” of AOLers and Daily Mail readers who don’t actually like music much have the upper hand here. Tossers.

Face it folks, Queen weren’t really *that* good, were they? Bohemian Rhapsody was no more than nonsensical cheesy bombast (albeit a pretty good example thereof), and was about the fourth-best track on A Night At The Opera. This one up against the mighty Kirsty & co is no Bo Rap. In fact it’s not even Fat Bottomed Girls.

  17. Pimp it in your journal, though, if you can. Tx

    Comment by juggzy | December 21, 2006

  18. well, I’ve done my bit for the cause, but queen are pulling ahead 54-46 at the moment!

    Comment by two_brains | December 21, 2006

  19. I can’t help thinking that it must be thirty one years since Bohemian Rhapsody was number one (in the UK)…

I heard it playing at a Christmas party I went to, all that time ago.

I actually rather liked it at the time!

  20. I hate that Pogues song. I’m not voting for Queen either though.

  21. Testing OpenID login. If this works, I’m scared.

  22. Me too. Makes my brain ache almost as bad as the Flogging Molly stuff.

I could be bothered to vote for Queen. I quite like that particular song, and it’s far better then the Pogue.

  23. I was about to enquire what Deepest Sender was but then I actually got off my own fat ass and looked it up.

Looks very interesting. Would be more useful to me if it was a standalone application that could post to many journals at once, but it still looks useful. Maybe one day I’ll be able to install firefox at work for more than just “compatability testing” purposes.

    Comment by matryx | December 22, 2006

  24. There are standalone aps that can do that, but I like the integration aspect a lot. Highlight text, right click, send, and I’ve got a formatted link with blockquote of the highlight, very useful. Can do multiple selections for one post, but you currently need to do them all first before editting.

And yeah, moving away from full admin priviledges with every plugin I want to whatever I get wherever I end up will be annoying, odds of getting an IT manager prepared to let me loose very small methinks. Fx is (slowly) gaining grounds, but the bigger the company, the more hidebound the software requirements are it seems :-(
